Cherry Blossom Festival Time. From March 28th through April 12th a tradition that began with a gift from Japan in 1912, Washington, D.C. will celebrate The National Cherry Blossom Festival ( Prunus x yedoensis). Their website gives the timing of the bud stages of the trees since the 1990s. Weatherwise the bloom period starts when Mother Nature happens to let 20 % of the blossoms open and ends when the petals fall and the leaves appear.
