"Powerscourt is an aristocratic garden laid out with taste, knowledge and imagination. It is the last garden of its size and quality to ever have been created," writes Peter Coats, author of "Great Gardens of the World." "Garden design was soon to pass from the hands of the architect and artist into the hands of the horticulturist: green fingers are more adept with a trowel or pruning than with the set-square, and what had been the past-time of kings and noblemen was soon to become a hobby for the amateur horticulturist." I'm sure Mr. Coats would have to retract that last sentence. Were it not for our horticulturists (many with a Masters and Doctorate) the work so necessary to preserve the great gardens of the world would all come to naught and our landscape architects are the descendants of the kings and noblemen. The creation of gardens is not their past-time.
